SELECTION OF A PROPER BATTERY FOR YOUR CAR
7 lutego 2023
What shall one pay special attention to whilst selecting a battery for own car?
What battery is appropriate for Your car?
In this article You will find a couple of practical tips that may help You with making a good decision whilst selecting a new battery for Your car.
Check the owner’s manual or maintenance instructions of Your car and find the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding battery basic technical parameters:
- Size of the battery – literally the physical size of the external casing (width, length, height) that will be the most fitting to the battery space in Your vehicle. Remember though, most vehicles are made to fit more than only one size of the battery.
- Technology of the battery – there are a couple of technologies the batteries might be manufactured with, and the correct selection guarantees proper functioning of all the vehicle systems, as well as significantly impacts the longevity of the battery itself. The main battery manufacturing technologies that we can point out are: Calcium-Calcium (Ca/Ca), Silver-Calcium, EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery), and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat).
- Battery lead layout – select the proper polarization of the battery, namely the layout of the plus and minus terminals of the battery, so it properly fits the existing installation, mainly the clamps. The most common layout is the one with the plus on the right side of the battery with the leads facing the observer, but there are exceptions to this.
- Cold Cranking Amperage (CCA) – Parameter describing the ability of the battery to generate current in low temperature conditions. The norm says of the average current given by the fully charged battery in 0deg. Fahrenheit (-17,8deg. Celsius) for 30 seconds, before the voltage falls below usable range.
- Reserve Capacity (RC) – parameter describing capability to supply the vehicle with electrical energy when the alternator stops working, expressed in the product of the current (A) and time (h), namely Ampere-hours (Ah). By calculation we can estimate how much time the battery can supply a given current before the voltage drops below the usable, usually nominal value.
Purchase Your battery in a specialized battery shop. This guarantees that the battery was taken care of whilst in storage and charged. In general technical stores, batteries may lay on the shelves for so long unsupervised, that some might not be able to supply sufficient current for vehicle start. In general, the newer the battery, the better. Learn to read the production date, usually ciphered in the battery serial number.
Check the manufacturer warranty conditions. Ensure the warranty is valid throughout the country, that will let You use certified service anywhere You go.
